MARCEL

My alarm startled me awake even though I went to bed early. I got a good run in and then showered before heading to the rink. I was so fucking nervous. I had no clue how this morning was going to go. Should I make my amends this morning or pretend like I was just hurt for now? I didn’t know when to do this. Some of the guys would be pissed I didn’t come out with it right away.

I got there even before Jude, which is saying something. Coach and Dave were there, though. I dropped my bag off and went straight to Coach’s office and knocked.

He looked up at me and gave me a slow perusal. I’m sure he was taking inventory of a half a dozen things before he nodded his head that I should come in. My stomach was a mess, but I took a deep breath and sat down in front of him.

“You look a lot better than you did the last time I saw you.” It was all he said as he kept looking at me like I might bolt. Hell, I felt like I might.

“I am. A lot better, I mean. I really appreciate this chance, Coach. I know you don’t have to do it.”

“Most wouldn’t, but we are a family. Good and bad. Right now, you have to earn your legs, not our support. I can’t keep a player who can’t perform.”

“I understand. I talked to Xander and Jude yesterday. We were wondering if you’d play me if I couldn’t play on the third line. Mix everything up a little. They said you were trying to make all your lines strong and not let the other guys know what hit them. If I can prove myself to you, I’d like to try that. Make a difference, I mean. Anywhere you play me.”

“Relax, Frenchie. You’re close to babbling. You’ll get a fair chance. I imagine it will take you a few days to get your feet under you. I won’t be expecting miracles today. I didn’t notice a limp. How’s the leg?”

“Great. I’ve been running five miles and did a lot of weight training while I was at the clinic. Not the same as being on the ice, but I did as much as I could.”

I noticed he didn’t say anything about if or where he’d play me. I’d just have to convince him out on the ice. I saw him look at the doorway and nod at someone.

Dave, our GM, came in and sat next to me.

“I heard some of what you said, Marcel. I also heard what Coach said. I wanted to tell you that I’m sorry we didn’t step in sooner—”

“Sir, from what I’ve been told, it wouldn’t have helped. I had to reach the bottom and climb back out myself.”

“It’s a disease. One that there is no cure for, just remission with a lot of hard work and discipline and if anyone has that, it’s a hockey player. I just wanted to tell you that we believe in you and are proud of the man sitting before us.
